MooMooClover 's 5 tips for becoming a VTuber

Follow these 5 steps and you'll be ready to start your own stream!

Tip #1

Design Your VTuber Character

Start with what you love, then make it yours.

I started by thinking about animals I genuinely love like foxes, bees, and cows. I narrowed it down to a Highland Cow because I adore those fluffy fellas AND it's a style I rarely see in the VTubing space. From there I followed the Rule of 3, which is three unique identifiers that make your design stand out. Mine became a cowboy hat, my papaw's arrowhead bolo tie, and a clover-shaped ear tag that inspired my name entirely!

  • 🎨 Start with what you love. Animals, aesthetics, hobbies, anything goes.
  • 📌 Use Pinterest. Build a mood board and piece together your vibe.
  • ✏️ Follow the Rule of 3. Pick three unique design details that make you, you.
  • 🐄 Think like an artist. Imagine how each piece moves before you commit to it.

Tip #2

Pick Your Model Type

There's more than one way to be a VTuber, find what works for you!

Not all VTuber models are the same! There are actually three main types: PNG models which are two or more images that react to sound, Live2D models made from animated PSD files that follow your face tracking, and 3D models that work similarly but in a full 3D environment. Generally 2D models run lighter on your PC than 3D, though that can vary depending on how many layers and masks are in the model.

The good news? Getting started has never been easier. Many artists (including me!) sell customizable project files on Ko-Fi and VGen that you can personalize right inside Vtube Studio without needing to build anything from scratch. It's a super affordable way to test the waters before investing time or money into a fully custom model. If you want a free route, check out Vroid, a program that lets you design your own 3D model, though it does take a little more technical know-how.

When you're ready to learn the craft yourself, YouTube is your best friend!

  • 🖼️ PNG models are the simplest starting point and very PC friendly.
  • 🎭 Live2D models follow your face and bring tons of expression to your streams.
  • 🌐 3D models offer full range of motion but can be heavier on your system.
  • 🛍️ Customizable models on Ko-Fi and VGen are a great affordable first step.
  • 🆓 Vroid is a free option for those comfortable with a little technical work.
  • 📺 YouTube tutorials are gold. Chupuko's channel is a great starting point, and I have a full beginner's guide too if you want to watch someone go through every single step!

Tip #3

Set Up Your Streaming Software

The right tools make all the difference!

When I go live, I have three core programs running that I recommend every new VTuber start with. Vtube Studio handles my model on screen and is honestly the most user friendly Live2D software out there with tons of unique features. MixItUp is a local streaming software that runs from your PC and handles all your alerts, commands, and channel point redeems. It can even talk to Vtube Studio directly! For example, I have a redeem that lets chat choose which model I wear mid-stream. OBS ties everything together by sending your overlays, model, and on screen assets straight to Twitch, YouTube, or wherever you stream. I love OBS because it's open source and has a huge library of plugins to make your stream feel completely your own.

For face tracking, I personally use an iPhone 12 and highly recommend an iPhone X or newer. The infrared front camera picks up face angles, eye blinks, brow movement, mouth shapes, even tongue out and cheek puffs! If you don't have an iPhone, a webcam paired with Nvidia Graphics Cards and Drivers through Vtube Studio also gives really solid tracking results.

  • 🎭 Vtube Studio for displaying and controlling your model on stream.
  • 🎛️ MixItUp for alerts, redeems, commands and chat interaction.
  • 📡 OBS for broadcasting everything to your platform of choice.
  • 📱 iPhone X or newer is the best affordable face tracking option out there.
  • 💻 Webcam plus Nvidia is a great alternative if you don't have an iPhone.
  • 📺 YouTube and program Discords are your best friends when learning the software.

Tip #4

Build Your Brand and Stream Setup

Your brand is more than your model, it's your whole world!

Building the MooMooClover brand beyond my model started with pulling directly from my character design. Since Clover is a cowboy cow, I built my color palette straight from her colors and added accents that felt like her world. A sky blue and a lush grassy green ended up being perfect because MooMooClover's vibe is rustic barnyard warmth on a sunny pasture. From there, every panel, banner, and graphic I made followed that same western theme so everything felt like it belonged together.

My biggest piece of advice though? Don't feel pressured to buy a bunch of custom assets right away. Learn the streaming and content creation side first, make sure you truly love the craft, and THEN invest. There are so many free and affordable tools that can get you further than you'd expect!

  • 🎨 Pull your brand colors from your model. Let your character tell you what your world looks like.
  • 🆓 Start free and spend later. Learn the craft before sinking money into custom assets.
  • 🖥️ Canva is a fantastic free tool for banners, panels, thumbnails, and even video editing.
  • 😊 Emote Lab makes adorable chibi emotes perfect for Twitch, YouTube, and Discord.
  • ✏️ Krita is a completely free drawing program great for more custom hands on projects.

Tip #5

Power Your Setup with the Right Hardware

Your creativity deserves a PC that can keep up.

As you grow, your setup will too. More assets, smoother tracking, and higher quality streams all add up. The last thing you want is your PC holding you back mid-stream or dropping frames when things get exciting. That’s where having the right hardware makes all the difference.

MAINGEAR PCs powered by Intel Core Ultra 200S Plus CPUs are built with creators in mind. That means clean performance, reliable multitasking, and systems that are handcrafted to handle everything from Live2D tracking to full 3D environments without breaking a sweat. Think of your PC as part of your toolkit, just like your model and software. When it’s dialed in, everything else feels smoother.

  • 🚀 Smooth streams start with a system that can handle your workflow.
  • ⚡ Intel-powered performance keeps your model, software, and stream running seamlessly.
