Remote Island Life Doesn't Have to Be Lonely

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game about living the remote island life, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t share it with your friends and followers! Since the switch won’t let you directly stream Animal Crossing: New Horizons to Twitch, Mixer, YouTube or Facebook, you’ll need a streaming PC with some specific hardware to share your island with the world. We’ll cover different hardware options as well as software to help you get to broadcasting Animal Crossing: New Horizons as soon as possible.

If you’re brand new to the streaming PC scene then you may also want to check out our PC Buying Guide. It explains each component that goes into a PC build and the choices you’ll want to make, beyond what we will cover in this post. We highly recommend reading the PC Buying Guide, especially if you are going to build a custom streaming PC.

Required Streaming Components

Nintendo Switch

Since Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a Switch exclusive title, you’ll need a Nintendo Switch to play the game. While all versions of the switch can play Animal Crossing, only the full size Switch can output a video signal that you’ll need to capture for streaming.

NOTE: If you own a Switch Lite and are considering streaming, then you might need to restart your game to stream it since Animal Crossing save files cannot currently be transferred between systems.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

You won’t be able to make adorable Animal Crossing content unless you have the game itself! You can purchase a digital or physical copy here from Amazon, or download it directly from the Nintendo eShop.

Capture Card

Since the Nintendo Switch doesn’t have integrated broadcast software, you’ll need to capture it’s output via a capture card. There are a few options when it comes to capture cards. The switch outputs a maximum resolution of 1080p, so a 4K capture card is unnecessary (but might be a good investment if you anticipate capturing 4K content from other consoles or another PC).

Capture cards come in two form factors, internal and external. Internal capture cards are ideal for most configurations as they connect directly to the motherboard of the streaming PC with virtually no latency. External capture cards connect to the PC through USB making them more portable and easy to install. If you plan on switching which PC you use to stream often, or you are streaming from a laptop, then we recommend using an external capture card.

Streaming PC

You’ll need a PC to connect your capture card to, but configuring a PC isn’t always that easy. Streaming requires a fast CPU to encode your stream, we recommend going with a Intel Core i9-9900K or an AMD Ryzen 3800X or above. You can also encode your stream via NVIDIA’s NVENC encoding chips found on NVIDIA GeForce GTX (1660 Ti) and RTX graphics cards. Recommended Streaming Software

Streamlabs isn’t the only option though. Many streamers prefer the default OBS or StreamElements. There are plenty of options to fulfill your specific streaming needs.

How To Stream Animal Crossing

If you’ve gathered all of the required hardware and software mentioned above, then you’re ready to stream! Follow this step by step guide to get set up in no time flat.

1. Connect Peripherals to PC

The first step is to connect all of your hardware so that you are ready to stream. Set up you PC as you normally would, connecting monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcams, mics, etc. If you are using an external capture card, connect it to the back of the PC using the provided USB cable (NOTE: Make sure to use a USB 3.0 port. These ports are often blue). If you are using an internal capture card then proceed to the next step.

2. Set Up Capture Card

Plug the HDMI cable that came with the Switch into the Switch Dock and the HDMI IN port on the capture card. Connect the HDMI cable that came with your capture card into the HDMI OUT port on the capture card and the display (montior/TV) you will use to play the game.

We recommend that you use two displays when streaming from the Switch. The first display connected to your PC (usually off to the side) for displaying streaming software and stream chat, and the second for playing Animal Crossing.

3. Choose A Streaming Platform

You’ll need to choose a streaming platform to stream your chill island lifestyle to all your followers. Twitch, Mixer, YouTube and Facebook Gaming are all great options. Pick your favorite!

If you can’t decide on just one, then you can use Restream to broadcast to multiple channels, but this adds complexity to your set up and isn’t recommended for first time streamers.

4. Set Up Streamlabs OBS

MAINGEAR recommends using Streamlabs OBS for it’s ease of use and quality stream templates. If you haven’t done so, download it here.

After launching Streamlabs OBS, you will be prompted to login to your streaming account, then assign your devices and do a network test. Follow the steps in the wizard and you’ll be ready to hit go live!

If you’d like to tweak your settings even more then follow this guide by Streamlabs.
